As we look forward to the 2020-21 school year, we will be developing plans to provide flexibility and choice for our students and families.  At this time we intend to offer the following options:
  • A 100% online learning option will be provided as an opt-in option for any family that does not want to return to in person instruction.
  • A model with some in-person learning for all K-12 students and some remote online instruction, leading to a full return to in-person classes (as permitted by the State of Michigan).
Lake Shore welcomes input from all of our stakeholders as we develop our reopening plan, and will provide you with more details and opportunities to have your questions answered in the weeks ahead.

OurLSPS Announcements

MI Safe Schools and Community Discussions

Last week the Governor's Advisory Council for Return to School released its recommendations and requirements for the return to in-person instruction for the 2020-2021 school year.  Lake Shore Public Schools has begun to work through these items with the goal of creating and maintaining an educational environment that is both safe and conducive to learning.  We began this process by holding a series of meetings for interested families as well as asking for your input on survey items and committee involvement in determining the best path for the students, staff, and families of Lake Shore Public Schools.  We will continue to meet this week at the pavilion at the Adult and Community Education Building, 23055 Masonic Blvd.  The meetings for this week are as follows:

Tuesday, July 7th, 6:00pm  Violet, Rodgers, and Masonic Heights Elementaries

Wednesday, July 8th, 6:00pm Kennedy Middle School

Thursday, July 9th, 6:00pm  Lake Shore and North Lake High Schools

If your schedule does not permit you to attend the date designated for your childs school or you have a child at more than one school, please feel free to attend an evening  that best fits your schedule.  If you would like to host a discussion at your home, please contact Shannon Ketelhut at sketelhut@lsps.org to schedule a time and date.  These outdoor meetings will strictly adhere to Executive Order and CDC recommendations regarding social gathering limits and social distancing requirements.

Attached you will find the Return to School Roadmap which details a variety of items Lake Shore Public Schools will utilize for the safe return to the 2020-2021 school year.  Please take a moment to review this document.  While comprehensive and detailed, it gives us all an idea of what we can possibly expect in this unprecedented and unpredictable time.  We will spend time this week discussing these items and how they might apply to our students and staff at Lake Shore.

Finally, part of our discussion this past week surrounded the critical need for collaboration, communication, and composure.  Now is not the time for panic and fear.  Now is the time for reimagining what is possible and working collectively for the future of our children.  We have a remarkable team at Lake Shore.  Between our families, staff, and students, we can find solutions that will create the best learning possibilities while maintaining the safety and well-being of our collective community.  Together we can make this unimaginable challenge a moment that, in reflection, may be our greatest accomplishment.  Together, we can protect the future of our children.  Together we can create an example for others to follow.  Everything and everyone together.

School Reopening Survey

Lake Shore is asking for feedback from our families, students, and staff as we plan for the upcoming school year.  Our goal for reopening is to craft a plan together.

Although we cannot predict what September will look like, we need to be prepared for a range of possibilities and your input in this process is essential.  We are exploring various options based on available information, however we ultimately will be required to follow guidance from Governor Whitmer's Return to School Task Force, who will be releasing their report on June 30.   You can assist us by completing a short, anonymous survey to help us understand what is most important to you regarding the return to school in the fall.  Parents: Please share the student survey with your child(ren), and help younger students with completing it.

Lake Shore Public Schools partners with the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), a governmental program ensuring that children in lower-income areas could continue to receive nutritious meals during long school vacations, when they do not have access to the National School Lunch or School Breakfast Programs.

The SFSP, also known as Meet Up and Eat Up, is operated at the local level by program sponsors and is administered in Michigan by the Michigan Department of Education (MDE), Office of Health and Nutrition Services.
